Trinitrotoluene – 24×48

Trinitrotoluene to the chemists, T.N.T. to everyone else.  T.N.T. is sometimes used as a reagent in chemical synthesis but is widely known for its use as an explosive, still used today in military and industrial applications.  First prepared in 1863 by a German chemist, it’s original purpose was to be used as a yellow dye.  This piece embodies it’s more modern usage as an explosive.  The deep fire reds burn in the center of an explosive mix of blacks, greys and whites, expanding outward towards the edges.
