Callirrhoe means “flowing beautifully” in Greek and this piece is an abstract representation of the river sharing the name found on Mars, the red planet. Although almost all water on Mars today exists as ice, though it can be found in vapor in the atmosphere and occasionally as a liquid in shallow Martian soil. All water movement has ceased to flow and what remains are the dry river beds encompassing the planet. The reds serve as a striking background to the beautifully flowing bronzes, reaching out and nearly extending across the entire piece. Upon a closer look, the bronze display vibrant hues of golds, blacks, and deep bronze.
The raw sides create a three dimensional feel that creates a sense of depth and brings the forward to the viewer. It has been sealed with high gloss art varnish to increase it’s luster, giving it a sense of movement while protecting it from UV light.
